Potassium Hydroxide

This is the highest quality food grade potassium hydroxide available. Potassium hydroxide (KOH), is an inorganic compound. It is a white solid, highly caustic metallic base and alkali salt. Potassium hydroxide is more soluble in water, ethanol and methanol than its’ counterpart Sodium Hydroxide. This alkali is deliquescent and readily absorbs moisture and carbon dioxide in air. In Soap Making: When potassium hydroxide beads or flakes are mixed with a liquid, a basic solution is created. This solution, when mixed with fats and oils, will cause a chemical reaction resulting in beautiful handmade liquid soap. Fertilizer: Potassium hydroxide adds the potassium levels to soil, thus enhancing available nutrients for plant growth. Many fertilizers are graded on N-P-K, where the K is potassium. Bio-diesel: Potassium hydroxide works well in the manufacture of bio-diesel and becomes an inexpensive food supplement for livestock once the methanol is removed. Crude Oil: Refineries use potassium hydroxide to remove organic acids and sulfur compounds. Animal Processing: Potassium hydroxide hastens the decomposition of soft tissues, both animal and human, to leave behind only the bones and other hard tissues. It is also used in the unhairing process of tanning to weaken the hair follicles to aid in removal. For this reason it is also used in many shaving cream products to weaken the facial hairs and make shaving easier.
